HEPCA (the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association) has become a force to be reckoned with, with the recently issued decree that will finally ban shark fishing in the Red Sea marking a significant victory for the NGO.

Burren Energy is the recipient of some resistance from an environmental group as the company prepares to begin exploration near a protected area of Egypt’s Red Sea coast. An environmental watch dog group – the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (Hepca) – is calling for an immediate halt to Burren’s exploration plans.
