Hurghada Landfill
HEPCA has carried out a scientific study to decide the most suitable sanitary landfill for the solid wastes in Hurghada, based on scientific standards for the conservation of the Red Sea’s resources.
The study was presented to all concerned stakeholders for assessment; The Department of Environmental Affairs, Hurghada City Council, Underground Water Administration, Government& Urban planning department, Environmental Affairs in Hurghada
International Airport, and HEPCA. Our only concern was the necessity of paving a road leading to site of landfill.
Because of the significance and the long-term environmental impact this project will have, HEPCA assigned professor Hesham Abdel Monsef - Suez Canal University and a visiting professor at Florida University, and Dr. Khalil Mohammed - Teacher of Remote Sensing and GIS in the application of scientific standards in this case. Using GIS data from urban planning institute.
The study was based on these important criteria:
1st: Environmental criteria for geology and geomorphology of the physical space.
2nd: Social criteria for social and economic activities.
There was also a series of field visits to the designated areas to confirm the chosen area, in addition to consulting Bedouins who reside in this area and travel agencies planning Safari trips in this place.
