Earth Day 2011 - A whole coastline in cleanup mood
1 day – 21 organizers – 450 volunteers – 470 sacks full of collected garbage The outcomes from Earth Day 2011 have been very satisfying for the health and well-being of the Egyptian Red Sea. We were happy to see that many dive centres and hotels took the initiative on this special day, which has been celebrated on April 22nd all over the world, to organize cleanups with their staff members, guests and friends. Between Hurghada and Wadi El-Gemal, cleanups took place at 23 different locations, including spots under and above water. We would like to thank Red Sea Diving Safari, Ilios Diving Center, Steigenberger Al Dau Beach Hotel, Jasmin Diving Center, Ibda’a Benafsak, Keep Quseir Beautiful, Blue Water Dive Resort, Ducks Diving Quesier, Subex Hurghada, Wadi Gimal Diving Center, Barakuda Amwaj, Barakuda Abu Soma, Dune Diving Center, Ducks Diving Safaga, Barakuda Lotus Bay, Shams Safaga, Paradise Divers, Orca Safaga and Mena Dive for their initiative to make the Red Sea a cleaner place. Thanks go also to Hilton Long Beach, Sheraton Miramar Resort, Orascom Marine Management, Fred’s Swim Academy, Spot Local, Equalizer Magazine, Splash Red Sea and WATERTAXI for helping out with cleaning Abu Monkar Island. Solid Waste is one of the biggest threats to our marine life. On average 80% of the garbage eventually ends up in the sea causing the death of the inhabitants of our waters. It’s in all of our hands to change this.
