Egypt attends 33rd International Sea Turtle Symposium

Our turtle specialist Agnese Mancini, accompanied by Islam Sedek from the Gebel Elba National Park, just returned from the 33rd Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation. Organized by the International Sea Turtle Society (http://www.seaturtlesociety.org/); this event is one of the biggest gatherings of turtle researchers and scientists from around the world. Approximately 1200 people from 80 countries were in attendance. Islam got the opportunity to present partial results from our HEPCA Red Sea Turtle Project: One during the “In-water monitoring session”: Snorkeling transects and photo-ID: two methods to estimate population abundance in a major feeding ground in the Egyptian Red Sea (about how to estimate population abundance of marine turtles in their feeding grounds using simple techniques) One during the “nesting biology session”: Green turtle nesting population at a major nesting ground in the Egyptian Red Sea (about number and trends f green turtles nesting in a remote island in the Red Sea) Both presentations received very positive comments from some of the most important sea turtle specialists that assisted at the symposium, both for the quality of data and for the results obtained. Agnese and Islam also took part in the Africa Regional Meeting and were the only group representing the Red Sea Region. HEPCA would like to thank the ISTS (International Sea Turtle Society) and all the sponsors for the travel grants that allowed both Agnese and Islam to join the conference. مصر تشارك فى المؤتمر الدولى الثالث و الثلاثون لابحاث السلاحف المائيه عاد للتو فريق عمل الجمعية المكون من د. انيازى مانشينى باحثة الاحياء البحرية المتخصصة فى السلاحف البحريه و الباحث المصرى اسلام الصادق باحث بيئى - محميه جبل علبة - بعد مشاركتهم فى المؤتمر الثالث و الثلاثون لابحاث السلاحف البحريه و الذى قام بتنظيمه مؤسسة "مجتمع السلاحف البحريه العالمى" .يعتبر هذا الحدث هو اكبر تجمع للباحثين المتخصصين فى السلاحف المائيه فى العالم و قد بلغت نسبه الحضور حوالى 1200 باحث تقريبا من 80 دوله مختلفه وقد حصل اسلام على فرصه عرض نتائج جزئيه خاص بابحاث هيبكا على مدار السنوات الماضيه:تم عرض طرق الرصد المتبعة من قبل فريقنا العلمى و هما : التعرف على السلاحف من خلال الصور الفتوغرافية و كذا احصاء اعدادها عن طريق مسح القطاعات على طول خط الساحل و هما طريقتان للحصول على عدد تقريبى للسلاحف البحريه فى اكبر اماكن تغذيه لها فى ساحل البحر الاحمرالمصرى ، كما تم عرض النتائج التى تم الوصول اليها الخاصة بأماكن تعشيش السحفاة البحرية الخضراء و كثافتها فى احد فى احد اكبر اماكن التعشيش بالجزر البعيدة للبحر الاحمر . كلا المحاضرتين لاقوا حسن التقدير من اغلب كبارالباحثين فى هذا المجال و المشاركين فى المؤتمر و ذلك فيما يخص الماده العلميه و النتائج كما شارك الفريق فى الاجتماع الاقليمى الافريقى الذى اقيم على هامش المؤتمر و كانت مصر البلد الوحيدة المشاركة فى الاجتماع التى تمثل منطقه البحر الاحمر.و نتوجه بالشكر لمؤسسة " مجتمع السلاحف البحريه العالمى" لدعوتهم لنا للمشاركة و نشكر ايضا كل من ساهم فى المنحة المقدمة للفريق التى ساعدت على مشاركتهم فى المؤتمر
