Last community cleanup – for now…
After two months of absence we continued our community cleanups on the 18th of February 2012. Ever since the launch of our weekly cleanups we managed to organise 15 events on beaches, streets and islands collecting tonnes and tonnes of rubbish with the help of passionate volunteers. This time we went back to “Felfela”, a beach in Hurghada that we have regularly visited in 2011 as well. We were happy to see that the rubbish-situation was much better than expected – a pleasant sign that our previous cleanups did have a positive impact. However, we still managed to collect over 20 bags of solid waste within 2 hours and could have collected even much more if more volunteers would have showed up. Because of the decreasing number of people participating we decided to not continue with the community cleanups – at least not on a weekly basis. We will focus more on involving schools, companies and other groups in less frequent but larger cleanup events. Earth Day 2012 is already coming up soon (22nd of April); last year we had 21 cleanups along the Red Sea coast and we would love to see this kind of involvement again this year! HEPCA would like to thank those people, who took part in our weekly cleanups! You all did an amazing job and we were happy to see the commitment that you showed!
