Power to the People!
HEPCA would like to salute all those who today took a strong stand to protect our natural resources and rights. Today dozens of caring members of the community responded to the call of the Clans’ Elders’ Council and actively went to stop the land-filling taking place in the A’hyaa’ district, of Hurghada. We would also like to thank the governor of the Red Sea General Mahmoud Asem Gad for complying to the will of the Red Sea’s caring community, by ordering the immediate termination of all land-filling works on the contested area. The works were being carried out under the pretext of sealing an old oil well, which HEPCA does not object to, but objects to the utilization of this pretext to convert an area of the Red Sea into land, and the robbing of the public of what is rightly and collectively ours. HEPCA also commends the governor’s decision to review the ownership of this “land”, which is an intertidal zone and an integral part of the sea and therefore public property. The governor also pledged that if the land is reclaimed it would be declared a public beach.
