Shark Memorial Site in the Red Sea

A worldwide campaign for shark protection is to be launched in Egypt by the SHARKPROJECT, one of the world’s largest international shark protection organizations. Shark monuments are to be placed at several locations around the world to raise awareness of the importance of sharks and the threat to their future. The first of these monuments is designated for the Red Sea. The monument has been designed and constructed in Frankfurt, Germany and was transported to Egypt by Lufthansa as a contribution from the company to this campaign. The purpose hereof is to call attention to the great threats our marine ecosystems are facing every day. This project is a joint action between the Sharkproject, HEPCA and the Egyptian government. It was sponsored by various large international enterprises (Aqualung, Citizen, Lufhansa, Mares, Scubapro, Seemann, Sea&Sea, SSI). Dr. Andreas Keppeler and Rainer Heftrich from the SHARKPROJECT began the planning and preparations already on the BOOT Show in Duesseldorf January 2007. The spectacular monument is a Shark on a Knife and is herewith intended to be a a symbol for all endangered underwater species. With the support of the Egyptian government and the National Parks of Egypt the monument has been placed on sandy ground in Gota Abu Ramada. The placement of the monument was followed by a ceremony hosted by HEPCA and attended by esteemed scientists, environmentalists, global media representatives and activists on the 19th October 2007.
