Sinai Governor & Tourism Minister Intervene to Protect Sharks

HEPCA is pleased to announce another victory in our on-going struggle for the protection of sharks in the Red Sea. New articles have been added to the governmental ban on shark fishing; it's now prohibited to display or sell any marine species that are protected or endangered. It’s hard to believe there are still businesses out there, which haven't realized the backlash they'll be facing for even minimal involvement in any activity that threatens sharks. This ordeal started when our supporters found a photo on Facebook of a dead shark being displayed on a buffet table at the Oriental Rivoli Hotel - Sharm El Sheik. Apparently, the hotel thought that this distasteful gesture would be a nice touch to their new year buffet display. As if this incident wasn't bad enough, we also received news that a popular grocery chain was also selling shark meat in their fish stock. Within 48 hours of posting the image to HEPCA's FB page, the post went viral as our members and supporters demanded that action be taken. HEPCA was in immediate contact with both the minister of environment and the minister of tourism about the incident, which resulted in the immediate issuance of these new additions to the shark ban decree. The Sinai Chamber of hotels was also very sympathetic about this incident and have committed to working with HEPCA to raise awareness about shark protection amongst Sinai hotels. Oriental Rivoli Hotel subsequently issued a statement claiming that the shark had been caught in Suez. They later claimed that the displayed shark was not real, but a representation of a shark created by an artist. The grocery chain acted much more responsibly by acknowledging their mistake and sending us a corrective action plan and a commitment to never allow this again. We commend Awlad Ragab Sons - Sharm El Sheikh for their honesty and corrective measures. We wish the same could be said about Oriental Rivoli Hotel – Sharm el Sheikh. We would like to thank the minister of tourism, the Sinai governor, the Sinai chamber of hotels, and all our members and supporters for taking immediate action. HEPCA would like to make it clear to any hotel, organization, business entity, or individual that when it comes to violations of shark laws and protection; we'll make you famous! You are placing money high above environmental responsibility and therefore contributing to the destruction of our marine resources. HEPCA is asking all tourists visiting the Red Sea as well as residents living here, to keep their eyes open. Please send us a report if you witness any taking of endangered species; this is an illegal action and shall not be accepted. محافظ جنوب سيناء و وزير السياحة يتدخلان لحماية اسماك القرش يسعد جمعية هيبكا لحماية البيئة مشاركتكم اخبار احدث انتصاراتنا فى الكفاح المستمر لحماية اسماك القرش بالبحر الاحمر ،حيث تم اضافة مواد جديدة الى قرار حظر صيد اسماك القرش لتشمل عرض او بيع اى نوع من الانواع البحرية التى قد صدرت قوانين سابقة بحمايتها او المهددة بالانقراض انه لمن الصعب تخيل استمرار قيام البعض بهذه الافعال و عدم ادراكهم حتى الان ردة الفعل العنيفة التى سوف تواجههم فى حالة القيام بأى انشطة من شأنها المساس بحماية اسماك القرش بدأت الواقعة عندما وجد العديد من مساندين الجمعية صورة على موقع التواصل الاجتماعى ( فيس بوك ) لسمكة قرش معروضة على طاولة بوفيه فى فندق اورينتال ريفولى بشرم الشيخ و على ما يبدو اعتقدت ادارة الفندق ان وجود سمكة القرش على مائدة الطعام سيكون لمسة لطيفة لنزلاء الفندق مع بداية العام الجديد ، و كما لو كان هذا الحادث ليس سيئا بما يكفى فقد تلقينا ايضا انباء و صور عن سلسلة متاجر مشهورة تقوم ببيع لحوم اسماك القرش ضمن قائمة معروضاتها فى قسم الاسماك و خلال 48 ساعة من نشر هذه الصور على صفحة الجمعية للتواصل الاجتماعى ، انتشرت الصور فى جميع صفحات اعضائنا و مساندينا و طالب الجميع بضرورة اتخاذ اجراء لوقف هذه الاساءة ، تواصلت الجمعية بمنتهى السرعة و مباشرة مع كل من السيد وزير البيئة و السيد وزير السياحة بشان هذه الحادثة ، الامر الذى اسفر عن اصدار فورى لاضافات جديدة لقرار حظر صيد و الاتجار بالقروش ، و فى بادرة سريعة من غرفة المنشات الفندقية بسيناء فقد ابدت استعدادها التام للتعاون مع الجمعية لرفع مستوى الوعى بأهمية حماية اسماك القرش بين فنادق سيناء و فى وقت لاحق اصدر فندق اورينتال ريفولى بيانا مدعيا فيه انه تم جلب هذه القروش من السويس ، ثم تلاها بيان اخر بأن سمكة القرش المعروضة غير حقيقة و هى قطعة فنية تم صناعتها من قبل احد الفنانين ، فى حين اظهرت سلسلة المتاجر مسئوليتها و قامت بالاعتراف بالخطأ و التأكيد على عدم تكرار مثل هذه الحادثة ، و نحن نشيد بأولاد رجب – شرم الشيخ لامانتهم و الاعتراف بمسئوليتهم و كذا اتخاذ التدابير الصحيحة لعدم تكرار هذا الحدث ، الامر الذى كنا نود ان يقال ايضا عن فندق اورينتال ريفولى – شرم الشيخ نتوجه بالشكر للسيد/ وزير السياحة ، السيد / محافظ جنوب سيناء ، غرفة فنادق سيناء و جميع اعضائنا و مساندينا لاتخاذهم هذه الاجراءات السريعة و نود ان نوضح لكل فندق ، هيئة ، كيان تجارى او فرد انه عندما يتعلق الامر بانتهاكات خاصة بقوانين حماية القروش لن تتهاون الجمعية ، فاعلاء قيمة المال فوق المسئولية البيئية يساهم فى تدمير مواردنا البحرية و تناشد الجمعية جميع زوار البحر الاحمر و ايضا المقيمين باليقظة ، و ابلاغنا فورا بأى تعدى على الكائنات المهددة بالانقراض فهذا فعل غير قانونى و لن يتم قبوله او التهاون به
