Thank You Note from Nora Ali

What has happened during the Earth Day 2012 in Egypt exceeded my expectations. I cannot express my gratitude for every single hand that has helped cleaning our precious environment. We saw many participants in the event, who committed themselves and their time for making our surroundings more environmentally friendly. Over 30 organizations gathered their teams together for their local cleanups. We saw dive centers, hotels, resorts, aqua centers and even spas giving back to the Mother Nature what has been taken away from her. However, what has really moved me was the involvement of our children in the event, especially the cleanup made by the School Of Mentally Disabled Children Of Safaga. Our children are our future; there is no doubt about it, but amongst all the negligence that we are witnessing every day, seeing a child caring for the environment is exceptional and it should be taken on the highest pedestal within the society. All the collected debris, small or big, is reducing the risk of damaging the extraordinary ecosystem of the Red Sea, thus I and the HEPCA team are extremely proud and thankful for all the efforts that every singular gathering made during the Earth Day 2012. As the popular quote states: “actions speak louder than words” I believe that the right message was sent through all the individual cleanups. Despite all the efforts that our Solid Waste department does every single day, the attitude of many within the city has been changing slowly but I believe that such events accelerate the awareness and the commitment of our fellow citizens. Recently, HEPCA has been into a war with the garbage Mafia in town, who unstoppably hampered our (as a community) efforts to make Hurghada a cleaner and better place to live with petty actions such as burning and stealing disposal bins. Now, with the enthusiasm and care showed in the occasion of the Earth Day 2012, we have been inspired once again to fight for our rights and to stand united as a strong and never defeating community. Every day can be Earth Day; we now know that the caring Red Sea community is not only ready but also eager to make this happen. Therefore, on behalf of HEPCA’s Board of Directors I would like to state my gratitude, appreciation and thankfulness to everybody who participated in the Earth Day 2012. Well done!
