Turtle Talk with the HEPCA Research Team

On the 26th of March, HEPCA's turtle specialist Agnese Mancini and her colleague Islam ElSadek, Park Ranger for the Gabel Elba Protected area organized a workshop with marine rangers from Wadi Gemal, Gebel Elba and the Marsa Alam area. This initial workshop was meant to give a general introduction on biology and ecology of marine turtles and updates on what HEPCA is doing in order to study and protect them. Some important collaborative efforts were planned as a result of the workshop and the team discussed ways to work together towards future workshops/research on the following important topics: - Collecting data in marine turtle feeding grounds (to be carried out in April) - Collecting data on nesting areas (to be carried out in May) - Analyzing data and translating scientific data into conservation actions (to be carried out around September) HEPCA looks forward to supporting the southern Red Sea rangers and working together with them towards Red Sea conservation efforts. Our planned workshops would entail training the rangers with practical in-water sessions and/or nesting surveys, as well as theoretical sessions in the evenings for dive centers on the MEGAbase project (some basics on biology and ecology, how to collect data, how to fill the datasheet and how to report data to HEPCA). Agnese concludes, "This important initiative will bring together HEPCA, the southern Red Sea Rangers, and the diving centers in the south to collect data on one of the most important and vulnerable of the Red Sea species. We've had a lot of positive response from the idea and are already planning similar initiatives in collaboration with the rangers and our supporters in the Sinai Peninsula. The research data that we will be collecting will be used to create science based management and conservation plans for the protection of marine turtles in the Red Sea." نقاش عن السلاحف البحريه مع د.انيازى مانشينى فى يوم الثلاثاء الموافق 26 مارس 2013 قامت د. انيازى مانشينى بالتعاون مع الباحث البيئى اسلام الصادق من اداره محميه جبل علبه بتنفيذ ورشه مع حراس بيئه محميه وادى الجمال و جبل علبه. الهدف من الورشه هو تقديم معلومات عامه عن الطبيعه البيولوجيه و الايكولوجيه عن السلاحف البحريه و تحديث عن جهود جمعيه هيبكا فى مجال دراسه و حمايه السلاحف البحريه تم وضع خطه مشتركه لتوحيد الجهود بين هيبكا و اداره المحميات كالتالى جمع معلومات عن اماكن غذاء السلاحف البحريه -ابريل 2013 جمع معلومات عن اماكن تعشيش السلاحف البحريه -مايو 2013 تحليل المعلومات و تحويلها الى جهود فعليه -سبتمبر 2013 تأمل هيبكا فى تقديم المسانده لحراس بيئه جنوب البحر الاحمر و توحيد جهود حمايه البيئه الطبيعيه. يتضمن البرنامج الخاص بورشه العمل تدريب عملى لعمل مسح لمناطق غذاء السلاحف البحريه و ايضا محاضرات مسائيه لمالكى مراكز الغوص تتضمن: كيفيه جمع المعلومات و توصيلها الى فريق البحث العلمى فى هيبكا اختتمت د. انيازى كلامها بان اهميه هذه المبادره تتمثل فى ضم جهود كل من جمعيه هيبكا, حراس البيئه و مالكى مراكز الغوص فى منطقه جنوب البحر الاحمر لجمع معلومات عن احد اهم الكائنات البحريه المهدده بالانقراض فى البحر الاحمر. تعمل هيبكا حاليا على تنفيذ نفس المبادرى فى منطقه شبه جزيره سيناء بالتعاون مع حراس البيئه سيتم الاعتماد بشكل اساسى على المعلومات المجمعه لخلق خطه اداره لحمايه السلاحف البحريه فى البحر الاحمر
