Coastal Cleanups

Garbage disposed into the marine environment is both an eyesore and dangerous. Plastic and glass objects, metal cans, fishing lines, gears, nets, abandon hocks, Styrofoam debris – all accumulating either in the sea bottom, floating on the surface, or dispersed across the land creates hazardous conditions.

As a part of HEPCA's platform on public awareness, coastal cleanups are organized on a regular basis to proactively send a message of environmental stewardship throughout the community. Land and underwater cleanups are one of the most effective ways to sustain the marine environment and maintain cleanliness. With any effective undertaking, there is always a set of best practices to avoid harm to both the community and the environment.

With all cleanups, you should have on hand adequate and sufficient equipment to include gloves, scissors, shears, and rubbish bags.

If your cleanup is underwater, the following should be noted:

Participants should be certified professional divers, who are familiar with the area of the cleanup.

Additional equipment needed is lift bags, ropes, and separate air sources. Equipment must be well secured, so nothing can trail or snag onto corals.

Awareness of what can be removed or better left to avoid further damage to fragile coral reefs. Do not remove articles that have already been incorporated into the reef and are helping to support life.

Careful removal of fishing nets and anchors is necessary.

Careful movements with equipment and body parts as not to disrupt the sand with fins and to avoid contact with the corals is paramount.
